Ariel: Well, Michelle, we did get past our first “pilot” episode in all of its accomplishments and follies. We then took a sharp tangent into the theme of working out / resistance bands / and future “merch” … Not sure how that happened.
Michelle: It happened, my friend, because it’s the two of us. 😂 How do you feel about having this episode out, though? I’d say it’s definitely the monster episode of the season – I mean, the MA thesis process is what really catalysed this whole project, and so much happened while we were working on our theses…
Ariel: Truly so much happened. I also ate way too many cheese sandwiches. I just want to say too that a lot of our jokes might be hard for people to get, like the resistance bands… but I think that makes a solid case for taking this to perhaps a video format at some point.
Michelle: At some point. We’re planning to be here for the long haul, so we’ll see how things evolve!
Ariel: I like too how we got into the various Latin languages we both know - and of course Star Trek fanfiction. That one came out of left field.
Michelle: Did it really, though? You were talking about how you always wanted to be a writer…Left field to whom?????
Ariel: Well yeah, you have a point. I guess left field when we consider that we sat down to really talk about our MA program - its pros and cons, how we navigated being in the minority of students who chose to do a thesis, and our individual creative attacks.
Michelle: It took over our lives, didn’t it? Perhaps you more than me, I wonder. I’ve always had the reputation of being a hermit type.
Ariel: Yeah, I haven’t… but I definitely can get lost in it without any outside factors tugging at me. I think it really was interesting to conversationally explore what it meant to fall into our different creative habits. I think we learned a lot about who we are as people and where we intersect too. In terms of the actual audio, it’s quite a bit better I’m happy to hear, and I think our overall dynamic is more audible to our listeners.
Michelle: We’re definitely more comfortable this time. Slowly but surely finding our rhythm.
Season 1 of The Apprentice Dialogues is themed around public scholarship and creativity. In this episode, we dive into what the creative process around research and writing meant to us and how we approached it, individually and together.
